Just imagine what has gone into the design of your newly fabricated kitchen. Not only the craftsmanship of our fabricators, but the eons it has taken for nature, too. Granite and marble counter tops are the real thing: not dust and polymers molded to imitate stone. That marble kitchen countertops are limestone which has been under pressure and heat for millions of years. It is made up primarily of calcite or dolomite crystals, and the patterns you see are other minerals like iron or carbon. Rain and moisture can corrode the surface so it is most often used indoors. You will see it used on floors at times, but it is quite slippery when wet. However, with proper care this stone will last a very long time.
The Greeks and Romans made good use of natural stone. You can see remnants of marble all over some of their most famous monuments. Whether they had marble kitchen countertops may be a question but if they used kitchens like modern folks do, then they surely had them there too!
Granite and marble counter tops come from two stones that polish very well. Because the granite and marble kitchen countertops have very tiny cracks within the fabric of the stone, they are usually coated with a polymer to prevent staining. There are polishes available just for the purpose of cleaning your stone, but mild dishwashing soap and water cleans them as well.
Granite is the harder of the two materials and less subject to stains, and often has a smoother finish. It is formed through the crystallization of molten lava. Minerals within the stone give it the appearance of flecks and streaks just as marble has.
